Senior Librarian - Early Literacy

Description:Location: Early Literacy Department

Status/Schedule: Regular, full-time, 40 hours per week. The schedule will be determined by the needs of the department and may include evening and weekend hours.

Background Information: This is an exciting opportunity to help shape the future of the Denver Public Library through the development and implementation of the Early Literacy Department. The successful candidate will draw upon his/her own knowledge in support of Denver Public Library’s Vision Statement A: Every child will start school with the early literacy and language experiences necessary for their readiness to learn. This position is critical to the enhancement of in-house storytimes and the highly successful Read-Aloud program as well as the expansion of the early literacy message to parents and caregivers.
Duties:Duties and Responsibilities: Creates lifelong library customers by ensuring a high quality early literacy experience for customers and staff. Develops programs and services for 0-5 year olds and their adults. Identifies and implements emerging opportunities to move Vision A goals forward. Oversees daily operations of the early literacy department including personnel, scheduling, budgeting and customer service. Supports a culture of early literacy throughout the community. Trains, coaches, mentors and motivates staff and volunteers. Communicates effectively with customers, staff, and administration. Coordinates department’s work with other library departments, City agencies and community partners.
Qualifications:Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of library services for infancy through adolescence and current research in early literacy and child/brain development. Knowledge of early literacy best practices in library and community settings. Knowledge of the Public Library Association’s ECRR initiative and the materials/resources that support it. Skill in providing strong, passionate and compassionate leadership. Skill in the recruitment, selection, training and motivation of a brilliant staff and a diverse group of dedicated volunteers. Ability to model a positive attitude, excellent interpersonal skills, cultural sensitivity, and a sense of humor. Ability to creatively problem-solve, negotiate and handle stressful situations in a positive manner. Ability to create and maintain positive staff relationships. Ability to communicate effectively with both individuals and groups. Ability to multi-task and prioritize. Ability to demonstrate innovation and flexibility.

Experience: Two years of professional-level librarian experience in providing library service to children and families focusing on early literacy within the library and in the community.Proven track record of training, coaching and mentoring adults. Proven supervisory and project management experience.

Education: A Master’s in Library Science from an ALA accredited program.
